Design development, layout planning, and hand-painted mural (with Josie Tipler)
Context
The client admired an artist known for atmospheric garden landscapes and wanted to bring that sense of immersion into their penthouse.
My involvement
Before painting began, I developed the mural layout using a 3D design program so the composition could be planned precisely around the architecture and continue seamlessly across walls, doors and corners.
Once the layout was finalized, my sister-in-law, artist and decorative painter Josie Tipler and I painted the mural by hand, adapting the artist’s language to suit the scale and architecture of the space.

Key Decisions
- Designing the mural as one continuous composition so architectural elements became part of the landscape rather than interruptions
- Positioning trees and pathways to align across doors, columns and corners to strengthen the sense of continuity.
- Allowing the painted sky to soften into the neutral ceiling so the room felt open rather than enclosed.
Outcome
The finished space feels immersive and atmospheric – shifting the experience of the room rather than simply decorating it.
